Chapel of the Divine Healer now on its 11th year
Written by LCF Helenmarie P. Mendoza

Last August 8, 2008, the chaplaincy office, assisted by the Camillian Family (CF), celebrated the 11th foundation anniversary of the Chapel of the Divine Healer with the whole Davao Medical Center (DMC) community.  Most Rev. Fernando R. Capalla, D.D, Archbishop of Davao, presided at the thanksgiving mass, with Fr. Cruzito Manding, a Redemptorist priest, and our very own chaplain, Fr. Tex, MI concelebrating.

The chapel was named the Chapel of the Divine Healer to celebrate the healing power of God, the True Physician.  Before this chapel was constructed, there was no regular chaplain to attend to the sick calls and other spiritual needs of patients.  Sunday masses were irregularly held in some convenient corner of the hospital.  The first chaplain was a Maryknoll priest, Fr. Walter J. Maxcy.  It was he who invited the Camillian Fathers to the chaplaincy work in DMC, knowing that the charism of Camillian Order involves service to the sick.  From 2002 up to the present, several Camillian Fathers have exercised their ministry in this government hospital.  Among them are Fr. Bong L. Pamintuan, Fr. James A. Roa, Fr. Boy S. Guinit, Fr. Benrue J. Mandin, Fr. Natz D. Maliwat and the late Fr. Pietro Ferri.  At present, we have with us Fr. Tex V. Buntol, who serves as the hospital chaplain and the CFDI Spiritual Assistant.

With the presence of the Camillians, the religious and the lay CF members as well, we know that the Chapel of the Divine Healer will grow into a vibrant community…living by the words of St. Camillus: “I will do all to alleviate the pain of the sick.  I will turn their dark painful lives into a hopeful one.”
