Echoes from the Mountain
Written by Fr. Domingo Barawid, MI

Last December 13, 2009, six special ministers of the Holy Eucharist and four new ones were installed to their ministry at the Annunciata Parish Church. They are to help the priests in leading the liturgy for the nine day preparation for Christmas day. They are to be sent to the different chapels under the parish.

Last December 16, the Parish ecology ministry spearheaded the launching of the Rainforestation (Agro-forestry) program in San Josep. Participants in the project were members of Kalingap Marikina Watershed, an umbrella organization initiated by the parish, the ISF awardees of the area, local farmers organization, the Dumagats (indigenous people), the school and outside partners like the Foundation for Philippine Environment (FPE), PLDT, SMART, Philippine Tropical Forest Conservation Foundation (PTFCF) and other organizations concerned about ecology, global warning and climate change. This program is the parish advocacy in healing Mother Earth and promoting wellness for humanity.

On December 23, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. the Parish Youth Ministry will hold a Christmas presentation with the theme “Pasko’y Ipagdiwang Kasama ang Inang Kalikasan” (Celebrate Christmas with Mother Nature). This is an hour and a half presentation of songs, dances and dramatization of God’s creation and man’s destruction of creation.  Though creation is being saved by Jesus, the Emmanuel, destruction continues.  To this the people’s response is to pray to God and to restore creation according to God’s design until finally Jesus comes to rule and bring about the fullness of God’s Kingdom at the final Christmas.  This presentation is made possible through the help of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart (FMSC) who also animates the youth and vocation ministry in the parish.

Lastly, the parish social service ministry supports the Dumagats in their fight against the building of Laiban Dam in Tanay, Rizal. It is believed that the construction of the dam will submerge seven barangays and affect more than 7,000 people, minorities and settlers. It will aggravate the degradation of the Marikina watershed. The parish hosts and facilitates the meetings of the chieftains and accompanies them in their dialogue with government agencies (MWSS, DENR, NEDA and NCIP) concerned with the project headed by the Social Action Center of the Diocese of Antipolo.
